Sophie Cunningham Steps Into the Spotlight as Circle City News’ August Foot Model of the Month

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has spent much of 2026 making headlines, creating viral moments and proving that she is comfortable stepping into the spotlight—whether she is wearing basketball shoes at Gainbridge Fieldhouse or making an unexpected appearance inside the UFC Octagon.

That combination of athleticism, confidence, style and unapologetic personality makes Cunningham the Circle City News Foot Model of the Month for August 2026.

From the Basketball Court to the UFC Octagon

Cunningham’s feet normally carry her through the demanding schedule of a professional basketball season. The Indiana Fever brought the popular guard back for the 2026 season, praising the competitive energy and personality she brings to the organization.

In July, however, Cunningham temporarily traded the hardwood for the UFC Octagon.

While attending UFC 329 in Las Vegas, Cunningham became a surprise guest ring-card model. According to UFC President Dana White, the appearance was arranged only about eight minutes before she walked around the cage. Wearing a black outfit, Cunningham carried the round card and even recreated the now-famous finger-pointing gesture that had previously made her a social-media sensation.

It was an unexpected crossover between two very different sports, but Cunningham looked completely comfortable. Her confident walk, athletic presence and playful interaction with the audience helped make her cameo one of the event’s most widely discussed moments.

Cunningham then returned to basketball and scored 20 points as the Fever defeated the Las Vegas Aces, demonstrating that her UFC adventure did not prevent her from producing on the court.

Cunningham Is Never Afraid to Speak Her Mind

Cunningham’s growing popularity is not based entirely on basketball or fashion. She has also developed a reputation as one of the WNBA’s most outspoken personalities.

She recently generated controversy while discussing her former team, the Phoenix Mercury, on her Show Me Something podcast. Cunningham claimed that people within the organization considered the current Mercury roster an unfriendly group.

“You know, what’s funny though? I know people in their own organization [who say] that nobody likes their team this year,” Cunningham said. “They say that they are the unfriendliest group.”

The comments came after a tense series between Phoenix and Indiana involving physical play against Caitlin Clark and a confrontation between Cunningham and former Fever teammate DeWanna Bonner. Some fans enjoyed Cunningham’s unfiltered honesty, while critics—including members of the basketball media—described the remarks as unprofessional for an active player.

Cunningham has also criticized WNBA officiating and repeatedly defended Clark when she believes her teammate has been treated unfairly. Whether people agree with her comments or not, Cunningham rarely gives the type of cautious, rehearsed answers normally expected from professional athletes.

That willingness to speak directly has helped make her both popular and polarizing.

The Viral Finger Point

One of Cunningham’s biggest moments of the season required no words at all.

During a June game against Phoenix, Cunningham became involved in an exchange with Bonner. Instead of yelling, Cunningham silently pointed at Bonner for approximately 22 seconds while maintaining eye contact. Both players received technical fouls, but Cunningham’s extended finger point quickly became a meme across social media.

Cunningham later admitted that the gesture was somewhat ridiculous—but said she continued because it appeared to annoy Bonner.

The clip was eventually referenced by companies, sports accounts and political organizations. Cunningham said she did not think much about who was sharing it because the image had spread so widely.

She also brought the gesture with her to UFC 329, using it while walking around the Octagon and giving the audience another version of the viral moment.

Why Sophie Cunningham?

The Circle City News Foot Model of the Month feature celebrates personality, presentation and the different ways public figures express themselves through fashion and movement.

For Cunningham, footwear is connected to nearly every part of her public image.

On the basketball court, her sneakers support the quick changes of direction, balance and physical play required of a WNBA guard. Away from the court, her game-day outfits regularly include bold dresses, heels, boots and casual looks that reflect a noticeably different side of her personality.

Cunningham has also expanded her profile beyond basketball by appearing in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition, hosting a podcast and working in sports media. She has openly discussed the importance of building a recognizable personal brand that can continue after her playing career ends.

Her UFC appearance brought all of those elements together. It featured the athlete, the entertainer, the fashion personality and the unapologetic public figure—all confidently walking into an entirely new arena.

Circle City News’ August Selection

Sophie Cunningham is not everyone’s favorite WNBA player, and she does not appear interested in becoming universally liked.

She is competitive, outspoken and willing to create a little controversy. She can wear basketball shoes while defending her teammates, heels while making a fashion statement or an entirely unexpected outfit while walking through the UFC Octagon.

Whether she is scoring points, pointing fingers or stepping into another viral moment, Cunningham knows how to command attention.

For her combination of athletic feet, confident style, memorable footwear and fearless personality, Sophie Cunningham is the Circle City News Foot Model of the Month for August 2026.
